Unethical reporting risks national unity

Dar es Salaam. The Acting Director General of the Journalists Accreditation Board (JAB), Patrick Kipangula, has cautioned that journalism that ignores professional ethics can endanger national unity, peace and social stability.

Speaking on Friday, April 17, 2026, in Dar es Salaam, Kipangula said journalists must recognise the weight of their responsibility, particularly at a time of ongoing social, political and economic change. He noted that the information disseminated by the media plays a critical role in shaping public opinion and influencing the direction of society.

He explained that peace reflects the absence of conflict and violence, while stability means citizens can live in safety and certainty without fear. These conditions, he said, depend heavily on strong national unity built on solidarity among people regardless of their differences.

Kipangula warned that unethical reporting can fuel divisions, mislead the public and weaken social cohesion. He urged journalists to uphold professionalism, integrity and accountability in their work to avoid undermining the country’s unity.

He added that the media has a core duty to collect, process and share accurate information, while helping to shape public attitudes in ways that promote harmony and development.

He also stressed the need to strictly observe the journalism code of ethics, which promotes truth, fairness, transparency and respect for human rights—values he said are essential for safeguarding peace, strengthening stability and sustaining national unity.
