The government has allocated TZS3.2 billion to extend electricity to nine villages in Ludewa District, Njombe Region, in a move aimed at accelerating rural development and improving livelihoods, Parliament was told on Friday.

Deputy Minister for Energy, Salome Makamba, said the funds disbursed through the Rural Energy Agency (REA) will finance power distribution to hamlets in the villages of Kitewele, Kimata, Ndoa, Chanjale, Nkanda, Lumbila, Nsele and Kilondo, with completion scheduled for September 2026.

She was responding to a question from Ludewa MP, Joseph Kamonga, who sought clarification on when residents in the area would gain access to electricity.

Makamba acknowledged the logistical challenges posed by the area’s terrain, noting that transporting materials to some of the remote locations remains difficult.

She said the government has contracted SUMA JKT Electric Company Limited to implement the project, with clear instructions to deliver the work efficiently and within the set timeline.

She said the electrification drive is in line with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s broader agenda of linking energy access to economic transformation, particularly in rural communities where electricity is expected to stimulate small businesses, improve education and enhance access to social services.

The deputy minister further directed REA to strengthen oversight of the contractor to ensure the project meets required standards and deadlines, stressing that reliable electricity remains a critical driver of inclusive growth.
