Traders at Rebu market in Tarime District, Mara Region, have acknowledged the presence of officials from the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) conducting tax education sessions, saying the initiative is helping to address challenges linked to smuggling activities along the Tanzania–Kenya border.

The engagement, held on April 21, 2026 at Rebu market bus terminal, focused on improving understanding of tax obligations and discouraging illegal cross-border trade that continues to affect government revenue collection and local economic activities.

Speaking during the session, trader Sarah Daudi said many young people involved in smuggling are exposed to risks that sometimes lead to loss of life. She said such incidents often leave families, particularly women, with increased responsibility for household welfare.

She noted that increased awareness on tax matters and legal trade could help reduce the number of youths engaging in informal cross-border activities.

“I will also share this information with other traders and customers so that people understand the importance of paying taxes and avoiding smuggling activities,” said Daudi.

Another trader, Ramadhan Juma, raised concern over the involvement of some bodaboda operators in transporting goods across borders without following legal procedures. He said this practice contributes to the movement of illegal goods and undermines regulatory efforts.

He said continuous education for motorcycle taxi operators is necessary to improve compliance and reduce their involvement in unlawful trade activities.

“There is a need to strengthen awareness among bodaboda riders because some of them are used in smuggling networks. Education can help reduce this practice,” said Juma.

He added that adherence to laws and regulations should be strengthened across all sectors, noting that compliance plays a key role in supporting orderly economic activity and national development.
