Government boosts digital service delivery with ICT equipment support

By Carlos Claudio, Zanzibar

The Government, through the Ministry of Communication, Information Technology and Innovation, has handed over Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment, including 36 computers, to the President’s Office – Constitution, Legal Affairs, Public Service and Good Governance, as part of efforts to implement the Tanzania Digital Project (DTP).

The handover ceremony, held at Sheria House, is aimed at strengthening efficiency in public institutions and improving service delivery through digital systems, in line with the country’s broader digital transformation agenda.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister, Permanent Secretary Fatma Mabrouk Hamis said the equipment is expected to enhance productivity among public servants while also promoting transparency and accountability in government operations.

She noted that ICT remains a key driver of economic and social development, adding that the Government is committed to ensuring that digital tools are fully integrated into daily public service operations.

“The use of ICT will not only speed up operations but also ensure that services are delivered in a more efficient, secure and transparent manner,” she said, adding that the Government will continue working closely with stakeholders to strengthen the digital economy and improve service delivery to citizens.

On his part, Tanzania Digital Project (DTP) Coordinator Bakari Mwamgugu said the project is designed to modernise government systems to enable seamless communication and data exchange between institutions.

He explained that system interoperability allows different government platforms to communicate and share information securely, reducing bureaucracy and improving efficiency in service delivery.

Mwamgugu also highlighted ongoing digital infrastructure improvements, including the provision of internet bundles of up to 20GB to support connectivity across institutions.

He added that the government data exchange platform, known as Zan e-Exchange under the Zanzibar e-Government Agency (e-GAZ), is expected to be completed soon.

He further said integrated service centres have been established to allow citizens to access multiple government services in one location, while others can now access services remotely, reducing the need to physically visit government offices.

According to him, 211 institutions, including hospitals, schools and other government entities, have already been connected to the national fibre optic backbone, significantly improving the speed and reliability of digital services.

He also noted that 450 government officials have been trained in emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning and Cybersecurity, to ensure effective management of modern digital systems.

In another development, the Permanent Secretary in the President’s Office – Constitution, Legal Affairs, Public Service and Good Governance, Mansoura Mosi Kassim, said the ICT equipment will help improve efficiency and strengthen institutional performance in service delivery.

She expressed appreciation for the support, saying it reflects strengthened cooperation between the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar and the United Republic of Tanzania in advancing digital transformation.

She assured that the equipment will be put to proper use to further improve public service delivery and support ongoing digital reforms.

The Tanzania Digital Project, which was launched in 2021, is expected to be completed on October 30, 2026. It continues to play a key role in strengthening digital infrastructure, improving government efficiency and advancing the country’s digital economy agenda.
