Tanzania’s Independent Election violence commission reflects national maturity

By The Respondents Reporter

Former Chief Justice of Tanzania, Ibrahim Hamis Juma, has said the establishment of an independent commission of inquiry into the violent incidents that occurred before and after the October 2025 General Election reflects Tanzania’s growing capacity to address its internal challenges without external interference.

Speaking on the development, Prof. Juma said the formation of the commission demonstrates national maturity and confidence in handling sensitive issues through lawful and structured processes.

He noted that the move sends a strong message that the country is committed to resolving its challenges using its own institutions and legal frameworks.

He emphasized that the commission operates independently and is free from influence by any institution, authority, or individual outside its mandate.

According to him, this independence is key to ensuring credibility, transparency, and public trust in the investigation process.

Prof. Juma further explained that the commission is guided by international legal standards and best practices, giving it a broader and professional outlook.

He said it brings together experienced experts with international exposure in investigative work, strengthening its ability to conduct a thorough and impartial inquiry.

He added that the involvement of professionals with global experience is intended to enhance the quality of findings and ensure that conclusions are based on evidence, fairness, and objectivity.

This approach, he said, will help reinforce accountability while also supporting national unity and reconciliation.

The former Chief Justice stressed that the establishment of the commission should be seen as part of Tanzania’s broader efforts to strengthen governance, uphold the rule of law, and build stronger democratic institutions.

He noted that transparent investigations into election-related violence are essential in restoring public confidence and preventing similar incidents in the future.

He concluded that the initiative represents a positive step in demonstrating Tanzania’s commitment to resolving its challenges through independent, credible, and law-based institutions that serve the interests of all citizens.
