The Government has launched the implementation of a TZS6.6 billion electricity connectivity project in Morogoro Region aimed at connecting 1,929 initial customers under the Last Mile Connectivity Programme, as part of its wider plan to expand access to reliable and affordable power across Tanzania.

The project, which is being implemented through the Rural Energy Agency Rural Energy Agency, is expected to accelerate electricity access for households and small businesses, enabling communities to engage in productive economic activities and improve livelihoods.

Speaking during the official project launch meeting in Morogoro, the REA Manager for Electricity Distribution Projects, Eng. Deogratius Nagu, emphasized the importance of close cooperation between contractors and local government leaders to ensure effective implementation and maximum impact of the project.

He said local government leaders play a critical role in identifying beneficiaries and guiding the placement of electricity infrastructure within the approved contractual scope, ensuring that the service reaches intended communities.

“Local government leaders are the ones who understand their areas well. They will guide where electricity should be extended based on the contract, and this will help us ensure that the intended beneficiaries are reached,” said Eng. Nagu.

He further stressed that contractors must strictly adhere to contractual obligations, maintain professionalism, and apply technical expertise to ensure timely completion of the project and delivery of quality services to citizens.

Eng. Nagu also noted that the project is part of a broader national initiative by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania to significantly increase electricity access across the country.

He said the Government plans to connect about 8.6 million citizens to electricity between 2025 and 2030, with REA spearheading implementation through various national connectivity programmes.

“We are implementing this programme to ensure that millions of Tanzanians get access to electricity. This is a major government commitment aimed at transforming lives and boosting economic activities,” he said.

Officials from the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited TANESCO in Morogoro North also called for strict adherence to quality standards throughout the project implementation period.

They emphasized the need for continuous communication between implementers and local government authorities to ensure transparency and keep communities informed about progress at every stage.

According to energy sector officials, the TZS6.6 billion investment will directly benefit households and small entrepreneurs, particularly those involved in small-scale industries such as welding, milling, and other electricity-powered businesses that contribute to local economic growth.

The contractor implementing the project, Magna Vis Group Ltd, assured stakeholders that it will adhere to all contractual requirements and ensure professional execution of works within the set timelines.

The company said it is committed to maintaining technical standards and working closely with project supervisors to ensure smooth implementation and delivery of quality infrastructure.

Local leaders have been described as key stakeholders in ensuring smooth coordination, especially in mobilizing communities, verifying beneficiaries, and facilitating access to project sites to avoid delays in implementation.

The Morogoro Last Mile Connectivity Project is expected to strengthen electricity distribution, reduce energy inequality, and support Tanzania’s broader industrialization and socio-economic development agenda as the country pushes toward universal electricity access.
