Tanzania and Hungary have signed a concessional loan agreement worth USD 55.1 million to fast-track the Biharamulo Water Project in Kagera Region, a move expected to significantly improve access to safe and clean water for local communities.

The agreement was signed in Dodoma by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Dr. Natu El-Maamry Mwamba, on behalf of the Tanzanian government, and witnessed by Hungary’s newly appointed Ambassador to Tanzania, Katalin Nyirati.

Dr. Mwamba said the loan, provided through Hungary’s Exim Bank, will enable Tanzania to implement the project fully.

“This initiative will enhance water supply for communities and supports the government’s national development priorities, including the Third Five-Year Development Plan (2021/22–2025/26), Tanzania Development Vision 2025, and the long-term Vision 2050,” he explained.

He highlighted that beyond concessional loans, expanding bilateral cooperation to include grant-based support in sectors such as capacity building, education, and social services would further ensure sustainable benefits for Tanzanians.

Dr. Mwamba reaffirmed the government’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties with Hungary under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, emphasizing that such partnerships aim to improve the welfare of citizens in both countries.

He also congratulated Ambassador Nyirati on her appointment, noting that it reflects Hungary’s continued commitment to strengthening historic ties with Tanzania.

Ambassador Nyirati underscored the enduring partnership between the two nations, which has lasted over six decades.

She assured Tanzania that Hungary will continue collaborating in key sectors, including water, education, agriculture, technology, and governance, while sharing expertise to enhance efficiency.

“The world faces economic challenges, but genuine cooperation between our countries will help safeguard stability and promote growth,” Ambassador Nyirati said.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water, Engineer Mwajuma Waziri, thanked Hungary for supporting the Biharamulo Water Project.

She said communities in Kagera are eager to see the project implemented, which will bring new hope and contribute significantly to regional development.
