Tanzania engages IMF on global economic stability amid rising geopolitical risks

Tanzania’s Minister of Finance, Khamis Mussa Omar, has held high-level talks with the Executive Director of the First Constituency of African Countries at the International Monetary Fund, Mr. Adran Ubisse, focusing on the growing impact of global geopolitical tensions on economic stability.

The discussions took place at IMF Headquarters in Washington, D.C., United States, on the sidelines of the 2026 IMF and World Bank Group Spring Meetings.

The two leaders exchanged views on how ongoing conflicts in different parts of the world, including the Middle East, are affecting global trade, investment flows, and economic growth. 

They emphasized the need for coordinated international action to protect economies, especially in developing countries that are more exposed to external shocks.

Minister Omar said Tanzania is closely following global economic developments and will carefully review and implement recommendations from the IMF aimed at strengthening resilience against external economic pressures.

He noted that Tanzania remains committed to maintaining macroeconomic stability while ensuring that national development priorities continue to be implemented effectively despite global uncertainties.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation between African countries and international financial institutions in addressing shared economic challenges.

The Tanzanian delegation participating in the bilateral engagements included the Minister of State in the President’s Office (Finance and Planning), Zanzibar, Dr. Juma Malik Akil, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Dr. Natu El-maamry Mwamba, Tanzania’s Ambassador to the United States, Dr. Elsie Kanza, Permanent Secretary in the President’s Office (Finance and Planning), Zanzibar, Mr. Aboud Hassan Mwinyi, Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Mr. Rished Bade, Governor of the Bank of Tanzania, Mr. Emmanuel Tutuba, Assistant Secretary to the Cabinet, Mr. Francis Mossongo, and other senior government officials.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to continue working closely with international partners to safeguard economic stability, promote inclusive growth, and protect citizens from the impact of global economic shocks.
