Tanzania and China Strengthen Longstanding Diplomatic and Development Cooperation

Tanzania and China have reaffirmed their strong and historic diplomatic relations, agreeing to further deepen cooperation in key development sectors for the benefit of citizens in both countries.

The discussions were held on 14 April 2026 in Dar es Salaam at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, where the Permanent Secretary, Samwel Shelukindo, met with the Ambassador of China to Tanzania, Chen Mingjian.

The two sides emphasized the importance of building on decades of friendly relations that have continued to deliver development results in infrastructure, trade, education, health, and other social services.

Forum on China-Africa Cooperation was highlighted as a key platform that continues to guide practical cooperation between Tanzania and China. 

Through this framework, both countries have implemented a number of development projects that directly support national priorities and improve the welfare of citizens.

Samwel Shelukindo expressed appreciation to the Government of China for its continued support in Tanzania’s development agenda. 

He noted that Chinese cooperation has contributed significantly to improving infrastructure, strengthening public services, and supporting economic growth.

He also emphasized the need to increase people-to-people exchanges between Tanzanians and Chinese citizens. 

He said such engagement will help strengthen understanding, promote cultural cooperation, and create more opportunities in education, business, tourism, and skills development. 

According to him, closer interaction between citizens is key to making the partnership more inclusive and impactful at community level.

The two sides further discussed practical measures to improve communication and simplify procedures that will make it easier for citizens from both countries to interact, study, work, and do business. 

The focus is to ensure that the partnership is not only at government level but also directly benefits ordinary people in both Tanzania and China.

On her part, Chen Mingjian reaffirmed China’s commitment to continue working closely with Tanzania in priority development areas. 

She said China will continue supporting projects in water supply, agriculture, health, energy, and infrastructure development.

She added that these sectors are essential in improving living standards, creating jobs, and supporting long-term sustainable development. 

She further noted that China remains committed to aligning its cooperation with Tanzania’s national development goals to ensure that the benefits reach citizens at all levels.

The meeting reflects the continued strengthening of Tanzania–China relations, which are built on mutual trust, respect, and shared development goals. 

Both countries agreed to continue working together to ensure that ongoing and future cooperation delivers tangible benefits to citizens and supports inclusive growth.
