Tanzania, Canada deepen cooperation in priority sectors

Tanzania and Canada have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation, focusing on key sectors such as health, education and trade, amid shifting global dynamics that continue to reshape international partnerships.

The renewed engagement follows talks held on March 22, 2026, between Zanzibar’s Minister for Education and Vocational Training, Lela Muhamed Musa, and Ryan Clark, Director General of the Africa Bureau at Global Affairs Canada.

Speaking after the meeting, Ms Musa said the two countries were satisfied with the progress made under existing cooperation frameworks, noting that the partnership has continued to deliver results across several sectors. She said Tanzania is keen to expand collaboration in priority areas that directly impact social welfare and economic development.

“We are encouraged by the level of cooperation between our two countries and the tangible outcomes it has produced, particularly in education, health and trade,” she said, adding that there is still room to deepen the partnership in line with national development priorities.

On his part, Mr Clark said Canada values its longstanding relationship with Tanzania, pointing to visible achievements arising from joint initiatives, especially in strengthening institutional capacity and improving project implementation systems.

“Canada appreciates the progress achieved through our cooperation with Tanzania, particularly the improvements in project management and delivery across key sectors,” he said.

He noted that Tanzania remains an important partner within Canada’s engagement in Africa, particularly in advancing education-focused initiatives that contribute to long-term development outcomes.

However, Mr Clark acknowledged that Canada is currently reviewing its global cooperation approach in response to changing international dynamics, which are influencing how it engages with partner countries.

“We are undergoing strategic adjustments due to the evolving global environment and shifts in international relations, which require us to realign our cooperation priorities,” he said.

Despite these changes, he reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to sustaining and strengthening its partnership with Tanzania, particularly in areas that support economic growth and enhance trade relations.

“We will continue to work closely with Tanzania in priority sectors, especially those that can drive economic growth and deepen trade ties between our countries,” he said.

The talks reflect a shared commitment to building a more strategic and results-oriented partnership, as both countries seek to align cooperation with emerging global trends while advancing mutual development interests.
