The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) is intensifying efforts to promote electric vehicles (EVs), positioning them as a key pillar in the country’s transition toward clean energy and affordable mobility.
The move reflects a broader push to reduce reliance on fossil fuels while supporting sustainable urban transport systems.
The state utility says EV adoption could significantly lower transportation costs for consumers, particularly in a market heavily dependent on imported fuel.
According to TANESCO, a single full charge requires about 78 units of electricity, costing roughly TZS 27,768, and can power a vehicle for up to 605 kilometres, offering a competitive alternative to conventional fuel-powered cars.
The economic case for EVs is becoming increasingly compelling, especially as electricity infrastructure expands across the country.
With improved grid stability and growing generation capacity, Tanzania is positioning itself to support the gradual shift toward electric mobility at both individual and commercial levels.
Beyond cost savings, TANESCO is highlighting the environmental benefits of EVs, noting that their adoption would contribute to reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality in urban centres.
This aligns with the country’s broader energy transition agenda, which includes scaling up renewable energy sources such as hydro and solar power.
The utility is also encouraging private sector participation in building EV charging infrastructure, a critical component for accelerating adoption.
Industry observers say the development of charging networks, coupled with supportive policy frameworks, will determine the pace at which electric mobility gains traction in the country.
TANESCO’s campaign signals a growing recognition of EVs as not just a technological shift, but an economic and environmental strategy.
As awareness increases, the transition to electric transport could reshape Tanzania’s mobility landscape, offering long-term savings for consumers while advancing national sustainability goals.
