Shemdoe praises PM’s hands-on approach during Union anniversary

Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office for Regional Administration and Local Government, Riziki Shemdoe, has commended Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba for marking the 62nd Union anniversary through inspection of development projects and direct engagement with citizens in Dar es Salaam.

Speaking on April 26, 2026, at Msimbazi Primary School grounds, Prof. Shemdoe said the Prime Minister’s decision to combine national celebrations with project oversight and grievance resolution reflects a governance approach that prioritises service delivery and accountability.

“I sincerely thank the Prime Minister for choosing to commemorate this important national event by inspecting development projects and listening to wananchi, even on a Sunday,” she said.

The Prime Minister toured key infrastructure projects, including the ongoing construction of Mkwajuni and Kigogo bridges, which are expected to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity in the city. Observers say such visits provide an opportunity for real-time assessment of project progress while reinforcing public confidence in government commitment.

Prof. Shemdoe noted that the large turnout of residents at the event signalled trust in leadership and expectations for solutions. “People have come in large numbers because they believe their concerns will be heard and addressed,” she said.

She also highlighted recent progress on the Msimbazi Basin Development Project, valued at over Sh190 billion, describing it as a critical intervention for flood control, environmental protection and urban resilience in Dar es Salaam.

“I thank the President for approving funds for the Msimbazi project, and the Prime Minister for his leadership in mobilising government and development partners to make this possible,” she added, referring to President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Analysts view the Prime Minister’s approach as part of a broader trend in which national commemorations are increasingly used to showcase development progress and strengthen state-citizen engagement, particularly in rapidly growing urban centres like Dar es Salaam.
