Regional cooperation vital for tackling digital payment challenges

The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) says regional cooperation is crucial in managing digital payment systems, as no central bank can operate effectively on its own in today’s fast-evolving financial landscape.

Deputy Governor Ms. Sauda Kassim Msemo made the remarks during the closing of a four-day joint payment and settlement systems meeting for East African countries held at BoT headquarters from March 30 to April 2, 2026.

The meeting brought together experts from across the region to strengthen transparency, stability, and efficiency in payment systems.

Ms. Msemo praised participants for their active engagement, open discussions, and practical knowledge sharing, saying it has boosted their capacity to carry out oversight responsibilities.

“One important lesson from our discussions is clear: in today’s rapidly growing digital financial systems, regional cooperation is not optional it is essential,” she said.

Ms. Msemo stressed that interconnected payment systems require coordinated and forward-looking approaches, especially in risk-based supervision, anti-money laundering, counter-financing of terrorism, transaction monitoring, and good governance.

Participants also visited the digital financial platform Mixx by Yas, gaining practical insights into fintech opportunities and challenges.

Ms. Msemo noted that effective oversight must consider both policy frameworks and operational realities of regulated institutions.

She concluded that BoT will continue to strengthen financial market infrastructure, improve supervision, and collaborate closely with East African Community member states and the EAC Secretariat to achieve shared regional goals.
