President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, officially launched the 2026 National Uhuru Torch Race today at Gombani Stadium, urging Tanzanians to strengthen national unity while celebrating significant public health achievements.

Speaking under the theme "Tanzania ni Yetu Sote, Tushikamane" (Tanzania is Ours All, Let Us Unite), President Mwinyi described the Uhuru Torch as a powerful symbol of justice, equality, and accountability.

He called on citizens, religious institutions, civil society, and the media to safeguard the foundations of the Union, warning that discrimination of any kind tribal, religious, or regional undermines trust and threatens the country’s stability.

The President also urged citizens to support government efforts to fight corruption by reporting bribery and unethical practices.

During the launch, President Mwinyi highlighted the government’s progress in combating HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, and malaria.

Free access to life-saving antiretroviral therapy has helped reduce HIV/AIDS-related deaths to 24,000 in 2024, while rehabilitation services have expanded, treating over 18,970 individuals at 16 centers nationwide by December 2025.

In Zanzibar, the Kidimni Treatment and Reform Center is currently serving 728 patients, demonstrating the government’s commitment to addressing both substance abuse and HIV prevention.

Malaria control efforts are also showing results. National prevalence has fallen from 8.1 percent in 2022 to 5.5 percent in 2025, thanks to mosquito control measures and widespread distribution of treated nets.

The government has allocated 10 billion TZS to purchase biological larvicides, which are being distributed across 184 councils, and over 90 percent of health facilities now provide diagnostic and treatment services, ensuring greater access for Tanzanians across the country.

Following the launch ceremony, the Uhuru Torch was handed to the Race Leader and began its journey in Chakechake District.

The torch will travel across the country, inspecting development projects and promoting the “Tanzania Kwanza” (Tanzania First) agenda, while reminding citizens of the importance of patriotism, national unity, and shared responsibility.

"It is the right time to show patriotism for the Nation, protect our resources, and build a generation that prioritizes national interests above all else," President Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi said.

The 2026 Uhuru Torch Race promises to inspire unity, development, and vigilance in public health as it continues its nationwide journey.
