Njombe Region has been named the overall winner of the 2024 Environmental Health and Sanitation Competition, highlighting its sustained efforts in promoting cleanliness and environmental conservation.

The award was presented by Prime Minister Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba during a Special Meeting of Local Government Authorities held on April 22, 2026, at the Arusha International Conference Centre.

The recognition was granted by the National Environment Management Council (NEMC), which cited Njombe’s consistent performance in maintaining high standards of sanitation and environmental management.

Presenting the award, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (TAMISEMI), Prof. Riziki Silas Shemdoe, said the region has demonstrated strong commitment to environmental protection through coordinated efforts at all levels.

“This award reflects the dedication shown by Njombe in ensuring environmental cleanliness and proper management practices,” he said.

NEMC Director General Dr. Immaculate Sware Semesi praised local leaders for prioritizing environmental issues and urged other regions to adopt similar approaches.

“Njombe has set a standard. We encourage other councils to learn from this example and strengthen their environmental management systems,” she said.

Receiving the award on behalf of the region, Makete District Council Chairperson Rabson A. Mahenge said the recognition would serve as motivation to sustain the momentum.

“We thank NEMC for this recognition and assure continued commitment to implementing environmental directives effectively,” he said.

The annual competition, coordinated by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with NEMC and other institutions, assesses performance in areas such as household sanitation, waste management, and hygiene standards in schools and health facilities.

Officials say Njombe’s success is rooted in strong leadership and community participation, factors that have helped the region maintain high environmental standards and avoid outbreaks of sanitation-related diseases.
