Nchimbi urges youth to uphold unity and Nyerere legacy values

Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi has called on Tanzanian youth to take a leading role in safeguarding national unity, promoting integrity and leveraging education and innovation to accelerate development, as a way of honouring the legacy of the Father of the Nation, Julius Kambarage Nyerere.

Dr Nchimbi made the remarks on April 11, 2026, when he officiated the opening of a youth conference held in Dodoma to mark the 104th anniversary of Nyerere’s birth.

He said the country’s future depends on a generation that understands its responsibility to build a self-reliant economy, think independently and make sound decisions that strengthen the nation.

He described Nyerere as a visionary leader who united the country and played a pivotal role in Africa’s liberation struggle, noting that his firm stance against corruption, misuse of public resources and abuse of power remains relevant today.

He added that Nyerere’s commitment to human dignity, equality and universal access to education laid a strong foundation for Tanzania’s development.

The Vice President said the late leader also instilled values of peace, stability and social cohesion, while warning against divisions rooted in ethnicity, religion, race and inequality, which can undermine national progress.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Sixth Phase Government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan to preserving the unity and solidarity established by Nyerere.

Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda, who chairs the board of the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation, urged young people to prioritise learning the country’s history in order to appreciate the contributions of past leaders.

He encouraged youth to read widely about Nyerere’s life and ideas, particularly his role in advancing African unity and liberation, noting that the foundation continues to nurture young leaders to become patriotic and accountable citizens.

The conference brought together young participants from across the country and featured discussions on patriotism, accountability, responsible use of social media and effective utilisation of available opportunities for national development.
