Hussein Ali Mwinyi has emphasised the importance of preserving historical sites in Zanzibar, saying they play a key role in strengthening the Isles’ economy and protecting its cultural heritage.

Speaking at State House in Zanzibar on April 1, 2026, when he met the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Tanzania, Marjo Crompvoets, Dr Mwinyi said the government has placed special priority on conserving and improving historic areas across the islands.

He noted that such sites are important not only for preserving Zanzibar’s history and identity but also for promoting tourism and cultural activities that contribute to economic growth.

Among the initiatives currently underway is the rehabilitation of the historic Majestic Cinema, a landmark building in Zanzibar.

The restoration project is being implemented in collaboration with the Government of Japan and aims to maintain the building’s original architectural design while expanding its use as a cultural facility.

Dr Mwinyi thanked the Netherlands for its continued cooperation with Zanzibar and called on investors from the European country to explore investment opportunities in the Isles.

He said Zanzibar offers promising opportunities in sectors such as tourism, the blue economy, industry, fisheries and agriculture, which remain central to the government’s strategy for sustainable economic development.

In response, Ambassador Crompvoets said the Netherlands remains committed to strengthening bilateral cooperation with Zanzibar and Tanzania at large.

She expressed satisfaction with the economic progress being recorded in Zanzibar and said her country is ready to expand investment and partnership in various sectors.

Separately, President Mwinyi also met the Ambassador of Slovakia to Tanzania, Ivan Lančarič, where the two discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in investment, trade and tourism.

During the meeting, Dr Mwinyi reaffirmed Zanzibar’s readiness to work closely with Slovakia to promote economic cooperation and investment between the two sides.

Ambassador Lančarič said Slovakia plans to open an embassy office in Tanzania, along with a liaison office in Zanzibar, a move expected to help strengthen diplomatic relations and expand opportunities for trade and investment.
