Mwalimu backs Chande report, says unity is key in implementing post-election recommendations

The Secretary General of the Chama cha Ukombozi wa Umma (CHAUMMA), Salum Mwalimu, has strongly defended the findings of the independent commission led by retired Judge Mohamed Othman Chande, saying all Tanzanians who love the country stand on the side of the report and its recommendations.

Mwalimu, who was also CHAUMMA’s presidential candidate in the 2025 General Election, said there are some political actors and activists who may not welcome peace and stability because they benefit from divisions within society.

Speaking on Wednesday, April 23, 2026, shortly after the commission submitted its report to President Samia Suluhu Hassan at State House in Dar es Salaam, Mwalimu said the report has addressed key concerns that were previously being raised in public debate.

“For those of us who truly love this country, we have listened to the report, we have seen the professionalism of the commission and its experience. Even the President herself has called for unity in implementing its findings. So how can anyone now return to inciting tension?” he said.

He stressed that national peace should not be politicised, adding that individuals who thrive on instability risk undermining progress if they oppose reconciliation efforts.

“Some people do not want stability because peace is a loss to them, but for anyone with good intentions for this country, the report is clear and the way forward is unity,” he said.

Mwalimu further called for collective responsibility in implementing the recommendations of the commission, insisting that attention should now shift from debate to action.

“If we are to judge anything, then let us judge ourselves on implementation of what has been agreed today. That is where accountability should begin,” he added.

The independent commission’s report, which was officially handed over to President Samia, examined the causes and impact of the October 29, 2025 post-election unrest and is expected to guide reconciliation efforts and institutional reforms aimed at strengthening national unity and preventing future conflicts.
