LATRA calls stakeholders to discuss possible public transport fare review

By The Respondents Reporter

Transport stakeholders are set to gather in Dar es Salaam this week to deliberate on a possible review of public transport fares following a recent increase in fuel prices.

The meeting, organised by the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA), will take place on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at the Karimjee Hall starting at 9:30 a.m.

According to the authority, the consultative meeting aims to collect views from stakeholders as part of the process of reviewing fares for public transport services operating on roads.

LATRA said the review exercise is conducted in accordance with Section 19 of the Land Transport Regulatory Authority Act, which mandates the authority to review charges related to regulated land transport services, including fares for public road transport.

The authority noted that the process of setting and reviewing transport charges takes into account a range of factors, including the interests of commuters and transport service providers, in order to ensure a fair and sustainable transport system.

The meeting comes at a time when fuel prices have risen sharply, with petrol and diesel increasing by about Sh950 per litre in recent weeks.

LATRA warned that if the factors driving the increase in fuel prices continue, the cost of fuel could rise further, potentially raising operational costs for transport operators and affecting the provision of public transport services.

As a result, the authority announced on April 1, 2026, through the media that it would convene a stakeholders’ meeting to discuss the situation and gather views on possible measures if fuel prices continue to climb.

The consultation is also guided by the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (Fees and Charges) Regulations of 2020, issued under Government Notice No. 82 of February 7, 2020.

The regulations provide procedures for service providers to submit proposals for fare adjustments or for the authority to initiate a review when necessary.

LATRA said the views collected during the meeting will help guide the authority in making informed decisions regarding a potential review of public transport fares.

Stakeholders who may not be able to attend the meeting physically will be able to participate online through LATRA Online TV.

The authority has therefore invited all stakeholders in the land transport sector to take part in the meeting and contribute their views on the matter.
