Envoys tasked to market livestock, fisheries opportunities globally

The government has stepped up efforts to attract investment into key productive sectors, with newly appointed ambassadors urged to take a frontline role in promoting opportunities in livestock and fisheries across international markets.

Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Dr. Bashiru Ally Kakurwa, told envoys-designate that Tanzania’s economic transformation will depend on how effectively its diplomatic missions unlock global demand and partnerships for underexploited sectors.

Speaking during a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Dodoma on April 13, 2026, the minister said livestock and fisheries remain among the country’s most strategic yet underutilised economic drivers, with vast potential to boost exports, create jobs and raise household incomes.

He said while sectors such as tourism and natural resources have traditionally received strong international visibility, it was time for livestock and fisheries to receive similar attention through proactive economic diplomacy.

“Tanzania still has significant room to unlock economic gains from agriculture, livestock and fisheries. Your role as ambassadors is critical in opening markets, attracting investors and positioning these sectors globally,” he said.

Dr. Bashiru pointed to a range of investment opportunities, including modern production technologies, value addition infrastructure, animal feed industries, aquaculture development, and improved livestock breeds. He added that partnerships in animal health services, skills development and research would further accelerate sector growth.

He emphasised that expanding reliable export markets for meat, fish and related products would not only increase foreign exchange earnings but also stimulate productivity along the value chain.

For her part, Tanzania’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Eng. Zena Ahmed Saidi, called for closer coordination between the ministry and diplomatic missions to ensure embassies are equipped with detailed and up-to-date information.

She said access to clear investment profiles, data and promotional materials would strengthen the ability of envoys to effectively engage potential investors and showcase Tanzania’s competitive advantages.

The push reflects the government’s broader strategy to align foreign policy with economic priorities, leveraging diplomatic channels to drive investment, technology transfer and market access in sectors seen as key to inclusive and sustainable growth.
