Dar Police arrest 37 over cybercrime as security remains stable

The security situation in Dar es Salaam remains calm, with police in the Special Zone intensifying efforts to prevent and curb crime through close cooperation with the public and other security stakeholders.

Police said on April 20, 2026, a total of 37 suspects were arrested in Ubungo on allegations of cyber-related offences, including issuing threats and using abusive language against individuals through digital platforms.

Investigations have so far established that some of the suspects are employees of INNOVIX CALL CO LTD and OTAIGO Financial Services Company Limited, firms engaged in online lending operations. 

Those arrested include Renatus Mujwahuzi, popularly known as Migeyo, a resident of Mbezi Beach; Odilia Oswin, also known as Ngunga, from Goba Njia Nne; and Theresia Brastius, known as Kanu, a resident of Mtoni Kijichi, alongside 34 others.

Police said the suspects are undergoing further legal processes to enable their arraignment in court.

The force commended members of the public for their continued cooperation in reporting crime, noting that community support remains critical in strengthening the criminal justice system.

Data released by police for the period between March and April 2026 shows a number of suspects have already been convicted after being taken through legal procedures.

Among them is Hashimu Kasimu, alias Duma, a resident of Kimara, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Ubungo District Court after being found guilty of defilement.

In a separate case, Vicent Laurent, also known as Ndimbo from Urafiki, Kinondoni, was handed a life sentence by the Kinondoni District Court for rape.

Habibu Nassoro of Charambe was also sentenced to life imprisonment by the Temeke District Court for defilement, while Ismail Ally, alias Muro, from the same area, received a 30-year jail term for rape.

Other convictions include Nelson Julius of Mavurunza, Kimara, who was sentenced to 30 years for armed robbery by the Ubungo District Court. 

Fadhili Issa, Peniel Jonathan (also known as Mtakibaleza), and Yusuph Iddi, all residents of Mbagala, were each handed 30-year prison sentences by the Temeke District Court for rape-related offences, with Iddi additionally convicted of impregnating a student.

Police have urged the public to continue sharing information on suspected criminal activities and to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, including appearing in court to provide evidence, stressing that timely reporting plays a key role in ensuring justice is served.
