ACT Wazalendo faults Chande commission report, demands independent probe

Opposition party ACT Wazalendo has rejected the findings of the commission that investigated the October 2025 killings, maintaining that the process lacked independence and credibility.

In a preliminary statement released on Friday, the party said its earlier position against the commission popularly known as the Chande Commission had been vindicated by the report’s conclusions. It argued that the body was formed in a way that could not guarantee justice.

The report was presented to President Samia Suluhu Hassan by the commission’s chairperson, retired Chief Justice Mohamed Chande Othman.

ACT Wazalendo said the outcome of the report was expected, citing concerns over the commission’s composition, mandate, and overall structure.

The party also conveyed condolences to families who lost relatives during the October 29, 2025 events and those who suffered in the aftermath.

It said meaningful national healing and reconciliation would only be possible through a transparent and credible investigation.

At the same time, ACT Wazalendo questioned reports that a new body could be formed to conduct a criminal probe into the same incidents.

It described the move as a potential delay tactic that could increase public spending without delivering justice.

The party reiterated its call for an independent international investigation under institutions such as the United Nations, the African Union, or the Southern African Development Community.

It said the statement was an initial response and that a more detailed position would be issued after a meeting of its National Leadership Committee expected within a week.
