Absa Bank Tanzania has today handed over a refurbished Mother and Children Ward at Temeke Regional Referral Hospital, in a staff-led community initiative aimed at creating a safer, cleaner and more supportive environment for mothers, children and healthcare workers.

The refurbishment was delivered under Absa’s “Adopt a Ward” initiative, a staff-driven programme through which employees identify a community need, mobilize resources and work together with the bank to deliver meaningful social impact.

The refurbishment works completed at the ward include: Roofing and ceiling works, Toilet wall tiling, Window repairs, External PVC works, Electrical works, Plumbing works, Aluminium door installation, Installation of toilet seats and sinks, and Painting works.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Absa Bank Tanzania Director of Human Capital & Culture, Mr. Patrick Foya, said the initiative demonstrates the bank’s long-standing belief that communities are strengthened when institutions and individuals invest together in practical solutions that improve lives.

“At Absa, we believe that ‘Your story matters’, and today we are reminded that the stories of mothers, children, families and healthcare workers matter deeply. This refurbishment is a practical expression of our purpose of ‘Empowering Africa’s tomorrow, together one story at a time.’

It also reflects the culture we continue to build at Absa, where our people take the lead in identifying community needs, raising support, and partnering with the bank to create lasting impact.”

Mr. Foya added that the project reflects Absa’s broader citizenship and sustainability agenda by supporting a more dignified and conducive care environment for women and children, while reinforcing the bank’s role as a positive contributor to community wellbeing.

“This project is a powerful example of Absa being an active force for good in society. By improving the Mother and Children Ward, we are supporting the hospital staff who serve this community every day, while also helping create a better care experience for mothers and children. We believe this kind of shared community investment is essential to building stronger, healthier communities.”

The initiative brought together Absa staff from across the bank, reflecting a distinctive internal culture in which employees actively champion community-based projects and the bank matches their efforts to amplify impact.

This model of staff-led giving and institutional support has become part of Absa Bank Tanzania’s wider approach to citizenship, rooted in collaboration, inclusion and long-term community value creation.

Absa describes its citizenship agenda as a strategic platform through which it seeks to play a shaping role in society by becoming an active force for good.

The handover also aligns with Absa’s organizational purpose “Empowering Africa’s tomorrow, together one story at a time” and its brand promise “Your story matters.”

Across the group, Absa positions these principles as central to how it creates value for customers, communities and stakeholders.

By supporting improvements in a critical healthcare setting, Absa Bank Tanzania aims to contribute to a more conducive environment for maternal and childcare, while reinforcing the importance of collective action in addressing community needs.
