DAR ES SALAAM — The chairman of the Tanzania Association of the Blind, Omary Itambu, has commended the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) for organizing special training on personal data protection for people with visual impairments, a group he said is often left behind in digital matters.
Speaking at the opening of the training in Dar es Salaam, Itambu said the initiative comes at a critical time as technological development and the use of digital systems continue to expand.
He noted that despite the rapid pace of technological change, people with visual impairments also need their privacy and personal information protected, particularly when using online platforms and electronic documents.
“These trainings will help us understand our rights and the steps we should take if our personal information is accessed without our consent, including where to report such violations so that legal action can be taken,” Itambu said.
Participants in the training include visually impaired representatives from several regions including Pwani Region, Morogoro Region and Dar es Salaam, as well as other parts of mainland Tanzania.
Trainer and legal scholar Humphrey Mtui said the PDPC organized the programme in line with the legal mandate that established the commission, which also requires it to provide public education and training on personal data protection to different groups in society.
He said the training aims to increase public awareness of privacy rights while strengthening accountability among institutions that collect and process personal data.
