The government, through the Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), has launched the construction of over 56 kilometers of paved and concrete roads in Ilala Municipal Council under the Dar es Salaam Metropolitan Development Project Phase II (DMDP II).

The initiative aims to improve urban mobility, enhance safety, and boost local economic activities.

During a field inspection of the ongoing projects, Acting TARURA Manager for Ilala, Engineer Grayson Nzunda, explained that the project encompasses paved and concrete roads, stormwater drainage systems, culverts, pedestrian walkways, street lighting, and road signage. The total project cost stands at TZS 138 billion.

“In Kivule, we are overseeing the construction of a 12-kilometer stretch. The Kivule-Majohe Junction road, 2.79 km long, is being built in concrete, while the Kitunda-Kivule-Msongola road, measuring 9.95 km, is paved. The Kivule portion alone has a budget of TZS 30 billion out of the total TZS 138 billion for Ilala district,” he said.

Engineer Nzunda noted that these roads previously faced major challenges, including poor accessibility and traffic congestion. Once completed, the roads will improve access to public services, reduce travel costs, and serve as alternative routes for commuters heading to Chanika or Majohe, easing congestion on main arteries.

Local residents welcomed the improvements. Vicky Shayo, a Kitunda resident, said her business suffered during the rainy season due to floods and muddy roads, which often caused accidents.

“Once these roads are complete, we expect better customer access and higher income,” she said.

Maria Petro from Kivule praised the government’s efforts, saying the upgrades have made travel to hospitals and other essential services much easier.

Hajibu China, Chairman of Karume Street, also thanked President Samia Suluhu Hassan, noting that the municipality is undergoing a visible transformation.

He highlighted that the installation of streetlights will not only beautify Ilala but also enhance security and safety for residents.

The DMDP II project is part of the government’s broader strategy to modernize Dar es Salaam’s infrastructure, improve urban living standards, and foster socio-economic growth.
