Tanzania will host a three-day celebration of World Press Freedom Day from April 28–30, 2026, in Arusha, with over 600 participants expected to attend.

The Acting Assistant Director of the Information Inquiry Department Mr. Evordy Kyando, announced the preparations on behalf of the Acting Director, highlighting the event as a platform to assess and safeguard press freedom in the country.

The celebrations, organized by the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts, and Sports in collaboration with UNESCO, the UN, development partners, media organizations, civil society, and the Tech and Media Convergence Institute (TMC), will bring together journalists, content creators, researchers, academics, and stakeholders from government and private institutions.

This year’s theme is: “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security.”

The main event will take place on April 30 at Mount Meru Hotel, Arusha, with the Prime Minister, Dr. Lameck Mwigulu Nchemba (MP), expected to be the chief guest.

The program begins with a fun run, followed by exhibitions showcasing media innovations, artworks, research, digital transformation, and creative content.

Group sessions and discussions will address policy challenges, gender equality, journalist safety, media reforms, and the role of media in national development.

The celebrations also offer the Government a chance to engage with development partners and civil society on key issues, including economic governance, women’s and children’s rights, digital rights, and anti-corruption initiatives.

Stakeholders, media organizations, and advocates of press freedom are invited to participate in the celebrations and highlight the sector’s contribution to Tanzania’s development.
