By The Respondents Reporter

The Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries has launched a nationwide refresher training program for livestock and fisheries officers to strengthen professional skills, promote sustainable production, and ensure effective implementation of sector laws and regulations.

The launch took place on March 3, 2026, in Chamwino District, Dodoma Region. Speaking at the event, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Livestock), Dr. Fabian Madele, said the training is part of the ministry’s strategy to improve extension services and boost productivity in the livestock and fisheries sectors.

“The training provides an opportunity to discuss openly how to accelerate sector activities, improve timely reporting, introduce innovative technologies, and enhance advisory services to farmers and fishers. Our goal is to raise productivity, strengthen food security, increase income, and reduce poverty,” Dr. Madele said.

He emphasized that the refresher course would also serve as a platform to identify challenges, exchange experiences, and develop practical strategies for improving extension services.

Officers from regional secretariats and local government authorities play a key role in delivering guidance and support to farmers and fishers, ensuring the growth of these sectors nationwide.

To further improve extension services, the ministry has purchased and distributed 2,258 motorcycles, 4,500 carrying bags, 3,270 cool boxes, 3,270 automatic syringes, 2,180 pairs of gumboots, and 2,180 overalls to officers between 2023 and 2025.

In 2025/2026, an additional 200 motorcycles will be procured, alongside continued refresher training.

Dr. Madele urged officers to work efficiently, deliver measurable results, and build strong, respectful relationships with farmers and fishers.

“Trust, open communication, and problem-solving are key to accelerating sector development and achieving ministry goals for the benefit of our nation,” he said.

Chamwino District Council Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Tito Mganwa, welcomed the initiative, noting that the training would energize development in both sectors within the district.

Dr. Charles Mhina, Director of Administration and Human Resource Management at the ministry, stressed that officers must uphold public service ethics to ensure effective service delivery.

Mr. Samwel Mdachi, Director of Research, Training and Extension, said the program is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the capacity of livestock and fisheries professionals.

Between 2022 and 2025, 1,908 officers have undergone training out of a total of 4,959 nationwide.

The training will continue from March 3 to 14, 2026, covering four zones: Central (Chamwino – Dodoma), Southern Highlands (Makambako – Njombe), Eastern (Mkuranga – Pwani), and Lake Zone (Chato – Geita).
