Airtel Tanzania has officially launched five new Airtel Smart Shops in Mwanza, marking a significant step in expanding digital services and financial inclusion in the region.
In his opening remarks, Regional Commissioner for Mwanza, Saidi Mohamed Mtanda
highlighted the strategic importance of Mwanza as the economic hub of the Lake
Zone, noting its key industries including fishing in Lake Victoria, small and
medium enterprises, cotton and food crop farming, mining, and the service and
tourism sectors.
“Reliable communication is essential for fishermen in Lake Victoria to coordinate sales and payments digitally. Similarly, for traders in major markets like Mwanza Central Market and Kariakoo, Airtel Money facilitates smooth transactions, payment collection, and product orders. For cotton and rice farmers, digital connectivity links them to markets and financial institutions. Airtel’s investment directly supports these vital economic activities,” said RC Mtanda.
He further praised the Tanzanian government’s commitment under President Samia
Suluhu Hassan to digital economy expansion and ICT infrastructure
development.
According to the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) Q4 2025
report, mobile subscriptions increased from 99.3 million to 106.9 million,
internet subscriptions rose by 3.2%, and mobile internet usage grew by 9.5%.
Smartphone penetration reached 41.82%, and overall mobile coverage now stands
at 87.11%.
“These statistics show that communications are a key driver of social and
economic development, enabling investment, facilitating trade, and improving
individual and national income,” he added.
Mwanza alone has over 1.2 million Airtel users, supported by more than
15,000 Airtel Money agents, and 153 mobile network towers ensuring connectivity
even in remote areas.
The new Smart Shops are designed to be paperless, user-friendly, and
inclusive, including accessibility for persons with disabilities.
Adriana Lyamba, Airtel Tanzania Customer Service Director, emphasized that the new shops bring
services closer to customers, supporting the company’s digital-first approach.
“Each shop is capable of serving over 400 entrepreneurs and small
businesses, providing quick, accurate, and efficient access to digital and
financial services,” she said.
Malaki Macha, Airtel Business Manager for the Lake Zone, highlighted the economic impact of
the investment, stating, “Through these new Smart Shops, we continue to support
key economic sectors in Mwanza, including fishing, trade, agriculture, and
various service activities by providing reliable communication and digital
payment solutions.”
The launch of the five new Smart Shops marks a significant milestone in
Airtel Tanzania’s commitment to delivering quality digital services, enabling
economic growth, creating youth employment opportunities, and supporting the
region’s modernization agenda.
