Prime Minister, Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, conducted a thorough inspection of Kasanga Port in Kalambo District, Rukwa Region, during his official working visit, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening transport and trade infrastructure in the Lake Tanganyika corridor.

The Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) expanded the port in 2019, extending the wharf from 20 meters to 120 meters with a depth of 14 meters.

The project also included the construction of staff housing and a passenger terminal capable of serving 200 people simultaneously, at a total cost of TZS 4.7 billion. In addition, two cargo warehouses, each with a capacity of 2,500 tonnes, were completed to enhance cargo handling efficiency.

Between July 2023 and December 2025, Kasanga Port handled 3,418 tonnes of cargo, 3,648 passengers, 11 ships, and 337 boats.

The port facilitates the movement of key commodities such as cement, coal, maize, rice, and maize flour, making it a vital hub for both local trade and cross-border transport.

As a strategic gateway on Lake Tanganyika, Kasanga Port is playing an increasingly important role in stimulating economic activity in Rukwa Region and neighbouring areas, supporting the government’s vision to boost regional trade, create jobs, and strengthen the local economy.
