The government has launched the construction of a TZS38.4 billion irrigation project in the Eyasi Basin in Karatu District, Arusha Region, aimed at improving water management and boosting agricultural production for thousands of farmers.

Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba laid the foundation stone for the project on March 6, 2026, marking a major step in the government’s efforts to expand irrigation and strengthen food security.

The project is being implemented by the National Irrigation Commission and has already reached 30 percent of implementation. It is expected to be completed by November this year.

Once completed, the irrigation scheme will benefit more than 2,500 farmers from six irrigation schemes—Mang’ola Barazani, Maleckchand, Laghangareri, Mbuga Nyekundu, Jobaji and Dumbechand—covering over 5,000 hectares of farmland.

Officials say the project will significantly reduce water loss that currently occurs through natural canals, improving water efficiency and ensuring reliable irrigation for farmers throughout the year.

The improved irrigation infrastructure is expected to increase crop yields, strengthen farmers’ incomes and support the government’s broader strategy of transforming agriculture into a more productive and sustainable sector.
