The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) has revoked the retail petroleum licence of Iyan Energy Limited and suspended the licence of Crescent Energy Tanzania Limited for six months following violations of sector laws and licence conditions.
According to a statement from EWURA, the decisions were taken by the regulator’s Board of Directors during recent meetings after reviewing the companies’ operations.
The revoked licence, Petroleum Retail Licence No. PRL-2018-269, was held by Iyan Energy Limited and permitted the company to operate retail fuel services at Plot Nos. 26 and 27 along Pangani Road in Tanga.
Meanwhile, Crescent Energy Tanzania Limited’s Petroleum Retail Licence No. PRL-2022-296, which allowed retail fuel operations at Plot No. 5, Block “N”, Chamakweza area in Chalinze District, has been suspended for six months.
EWURA said investigations revealed that both companies were engaged in activities resembling wholesale petroleum trading, which is prohibited under retail licences.
This contravenes Section 131 of the Petroleum Act and Regulations 9 and 11 of the Petroleum (Wholesale, Storage, Retail and Consumer Installation Operations) Regulations, Government Notice No. 150 of 2022.
The authority also warned the public that any dealings with the affected companies in the supply of petroleum products would be illegal.
“Appropriate legal action will be taken against anyone who violates this directive,” EWURA said.
EWURA emphasized that it will continue to oversee the petroleum sector, ensuring fair competition and reliable access to petroleum products, while maintaining a level playing field for all market players.
