Kuwait’s air defence systems accidentally shot down three United States fighter jets on Monday during an Iranian aerial assault, the US military has confirmed.
The aircraft, identified as F-15E Strike Eagles, were lost amid ongoing attacks involving Iranian planes, missiles, and drones. All six crew members ejected safely and were later rescued. Officials reported they are in stable condition.
Eyewitness Ahmed al-Asar described hearing loud explosions as one jet fell from the sky in flames. “I initially thought the pilot was Iranian, but then I realised he was American,” he said, recalling the moment he saw an airman parachuting down.
Iranian state media claimed one of the aircraft had been targeted by Iran, though no additional details were provided.
United States Central Command said the jets were mistakenly engaged by Kuwaiti air defences while Kuwait was supporting US combat operations related to Iran.
Kuwaiti authorities acknowledged the error and pledged full cooperation with the investigation.
US officials expressed gratitude for Kuwait’s assistance and said inquiries are ongoing to determine how the misidentification occurred.
The incident highlights rising tensions in the region as conflict escalates between Iran and US-led forces.
