Benjamin Mkapa Hospital has kicked off preparations to celebrate its 10th anniversary, unveiling a TZS 7 billion fundraising campaign to enhance specialized medical services, including bone marrow transplants for children with sickle cell disease and kidney transplants.

Speaking in Dodoma on March 31, 2026, the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Professor Abel Makubi, highlighted the facility’s role as a major referral center, serving nearly 10 million Tanzanians as well as patients from neighboring countries.

He said the hospital has also emerged as a key destination for medical tourism in the region.

Professor Makubi explained that the fundraiser, set to run over two years, aims to support treatment for 100 patients 50 children requiring bone marrow transplants for sickle cell disease and 50 patients in need of kidney transplants.

Strengthening these services locally is expected to significantly reduce the high costs previously incurred by patients seeking treatment abroad, making advanced healthcare more accessible to middle- and low-income citizens.

Dr. Devid Raymond, representing the Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), said the insurance body continues to introduce new packages to expand coverage for Tanzanians.

He noted that while kidney and bone marrow transplants are not yet directly covered, the government is taking steps to support these services and ease financial pressures on patients and their families.

The fundraising event will be held on May 8, 2026, in Dodoma, coinciding with the hospital’s anniversary celebrations. President Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to attend as the Guest of Honor.

The milestone celebrations aim to strengthen Tanzania’s healthcare system, particularly in managing chronic diseases that require advanced technology, and to ensure citizens can access modern, affordable medical care within the country.
