Azam, Yanga set for crucial Mzizima derby tomorrow

By Victoria Godfrey

Azam FC will take on rivals Young Africans SC tomorrow in the highly anticipated Mzizima derby of the NBC Premier League at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

The match is expected to draw a large crowd as both Dar es Salaam giants battle for vital league points in one of the season’s most closely watched fixtures.

Young Africans head coach Pedro Gonçalves said his side is in good form since he took charge of the team, noting that they have recorded only one draw during that period.

According to him, the record reflects the stability and competitiveness of the squad as they head into the derby.

He said the team has enough quality and confidence to face any opponent.

He noted that acknowledging Azam’s strength does not mean his team will approach the game with fear, stressing that Young Africans also have a strong squad capable of delivering results.

He added that the team respects its opponents but will approach the match with determination and discipline.

Gonçalves also pointed out that one of the challenges players sometimes face is adapting to different playing surfaces, as some pitches offer better conditions than others, which requires players to remain tactically aware.

Young Africans defender Mohamed Hussein said preparations for the match have gone well and that the players clearly understand the importance of the encounter.

He assured supporters that the squad is ready for the challenge despite the difficulty of the match.

Hussein said the team’s first priority will be maintaining a solid defence while also creating scoring opportunities without losing focus on securing victory.

He added that Azam remain a strong side with talented players and have continued to improve as the season progresses.

On the other side, Azam head coach Florent Ibenge said his team is prepared to deliver a strong performance and fight for victory in the derby.

He said the team’s experience in playing high-profile matches will help them cope with the pressure of the encounter.

Azam player Lusajo Mwaikenda said the team has focused on strengthening its defensive organisation to ensure they avoid conceding goals in the crucial match.
