The Presidential Advisory Council on Agriculture and Food convened a strategic meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries to discuss measures for boosting production and enhancing food security across the country.

The session, chaired by the Council’s Chairman and former Prime Minister, Hon. Mizengo Pinda, took place today, March 24, 2026, at Kilimo Four Hall in Dodoma.

Pinda noted that the council has been instrumental in fostering collaboration between stakeholders and the private sector, urging the ministries to work in unison to achieve national production targets set for 2030.

“These goals take us to 2030. Today is 2026, and time is not our friend. We need strong commitment, but united, we will achieve them,” Pinda said.

Presenting the National Food Production Increase Plan, the Council’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Florence Turuka, highlighted the government’s commitment to the livestock sector, aiming to raise beef production from 742,000 tonnes in 2021/2022 to 1,000,000 tonnes by 2030.

Milk production is also targeted to grow from 3.4 billion litres in 2021/2022 to 5 billion litres by 2030.

During the meeting, Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, Amb. Dr. Bashiru Ally Kakurwa, said his ministry continues to oversee the livestock and fisheries sectors to safeguard food security.

He requested the council’s support in supervising the national animal health system, including regulation of veterinary drugs.

“Currently, regulation of veterinary medicines is handled by TMDA under the Ministry of Health, which limits scientific oversight of animal health. The process must go beyond drug control to comprehensive veterinary management,” Dr. Kakurwa explained.

Minister of Agriculture, Daniel Chongolo, stressed the importance of integrating government-led youth initiatives, such as Jenga Kesho Iliyo Bora (BBT), into agriculture, livestock, and fisheries sectors to improve efficiency and create economic opportunities for young people.

The meeting reaffirmed the government’s commitment to uniting stakeholders, strengthening scientific oversight, and empowering youth, all aimed at securing Tanzania’s food future by 2030.
