Laboratory experts from 14 African Union member states are benefiting from a ten-day intensive training on laboratory safety, maintenance, and management at Tanzania’s National Laboratory, part of ongoing efforts by the government to harmonize laboratory services across the continent.

The training, organized by the Ministry of Health through its Regional Centre of Excellence in Laboratory Safety and Security of Hazardous Biological Agents, is sponsored by the African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).

Opening the program, National Laboratory Director Mr. Ambele Mwafulango urged participants to make the most of the opportunity.

“I am confident that by the end of this training, every participant will gain a comprehensive understanding of the selection, installation, maintenance, and quality control of Biological Safety Cabinets,” he said.

Mr. Mwafulango emphasized that beyond knowledge and technical skills, the program will strengthen Africa’s capacity to rely on its own experts in laboratory management, reducing dependency on external support.

“This initiative is vital for building self-sufficient laboratory services in member states and advancing public health across the continent,” he added.

The ten-day program brings together specialists in laboratory work and medical equipment, equipping them with practical skills to enhance safety and efficiency in their home countries’ laboratories.
