Mwanza floods rescue four children and woman found in Lake Victoria

Torrential rains that struck Mwanza overnight have caused severe flooding, disrupting economic activities and leaving residents stranded in their homes.

Four children from different families were rescued in Mkuyuni, the area hardest hit, while the body of a woman was later found floating in Lake Victoria.

Regional Fire and Rescue Commander Elisa Mugisha said the floods followed heavy rainfall that began around 9:30 p.m.

“Roads in Mkuyuni and Butimba had to be closed to protect residents and motorists. Some vehicles that tried to cross the floodwaters were swept away and had to be towed,” she explained.

Commander Mugisha added that the most affected areas included Nyamh’ongolo, Mkuyuni, and Butimba, where residents climbed onto rooftops and walls to escape rising waters.

The four rescued children included a four-month-old girl taken to Sekou-Toure Regional Referral Hospital, while three others, separated from their parents, received care from rescue teams.

Despite property losses, no human fatalities were reported apart from the woman found in Lake Victoria. Mugisha said investigations into property damage and other flood impacts are ongoing.

She urged residents to exercise caution, follow proper building guidelines, and use emergency numbers for timely help.

“We have received many calls for assistance, showing that public awareness has improved,” she noted.

Residents blamed inadequate infrastructure for worsening the floods. “The Mkuyuni bridge does not allow water to pass efficiently,” said Asha Shaaban, whose home was affected.

Chacha Getonga added that the flooding forced many commuters to abandon their journeys, affecting livelihoods.

Bertha Rock described her struggle to travel to Geita after police blocked buses from crossing the flooded bridge, forcing her to take a longer detour.

Another resident, Baba Nelly, called on authorities to address water management at the bridge, which he said acts as a gateway to Lake Victoria during heavy rains.

The Mwanza floods underscore the need for improved infrastructure and emergency preparedness to protect residents and limit damage from extreme weather.
