Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Emmanuel Nchimbi, arrived in Songea, Ruvuma Region, on Wednesday ahead of the climax of events marking 120 years since the Majimaji War.
Mr Nchimbi is expected to officiate at the main commemorative ceremony scheduled for February 27, 2026, at the Majimaji Memorial Museum Grounds, a site of deep national historical significance.
At Songea Airport, the Vice President was received by Ruvuma Regional Commissioner Brigadier General Ahmed Abbas, Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Hamad Chande, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Ruvuma Regional Chairman Oddo Mwisho, senior government officials, leaders of public and private institutions, religious leaders, representatives of political parties, local residents and traditional chiefs of the Wangoni community from South Africa, Malawi and Tanzania.
The Majimaji Heroes’ Commemoration is held annually every February to honour Tanzanian freedom fighters who rose against German colonial rule in the early 20th century.
This year’s event carries added weight as it marks 120 years since the historic uprising, widely regarded as a defining moment in the country’s resistance to colonial domination.
The festival is expected to feature cultural performances, historical exhibitions and educational activities showcasing the heritage of southern Tanzania, while reinforcing national unity and preserving the legacy of the Majimaji heroes for future generations.
