The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) is strengthening the skills of its staff to improve tax collection, thanks to a collaborative project with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Deputy Commissioner of TRA, Mr. Mcha Hassan Mcha, said the initiative, which started in 2023 and is expected to conclude this September, focuses on equipping employees with professional techniques and data analysis skills to identify key areas for tax audits.

“The goal of this project is to build the capacity of our staff to carry out targeted investigations and enhance efficiency in tax collection,” Mr. Mcha explained during a recent meeting with JICA officials overseeing the program.

Currently, the project is active in three major tax regions: Kinondoni, Temeke, and Arusha, with plans to expand to other regions in the near future.

Early results are already showing promise, particularly in the construction sector. TRA now plans to extend the program to other key economic sectors, including tourism and other areas crucial to Tanzania’s growth.

Mr. Mcha emphasized that investing in professional capacity is key to modernizing tax operations and ensuring sustainable revenue collection for the country.
