The Government of President Samia Suluhu Hassan has confirmed plans to purchase eight new aircraft this year, aiming to expand regional and international connectivity, stimulate the economy, and promote tourism across Tanzania.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at Mwalimu Julius Nyerere International Airport, Government Spokesperson Mr. Gerson Msigwa said four of the eight planes will be acquired this year as part of the government’s strategy to improve air transport services.

“The new aircraft will be Bombardier Q400 models, strengthening our national airline’s network and supporting tourism, business, and travel within Tanzania and abroad,” Mr. Msigwa said.

He added that the national airline has achieved significant progress, now operating 16 aircraft and serving over 33 destinations both locally and internationally. “Our airline is now recognized as one of the strongest in Africa in terms of its network,” he noted.

The spokesperson explained that the new aircraft will operate long-haul flights to Mumbai, Johannesburg, and Accra, while other planes will serve medium and short-haul routes, including Pemba, Lagos, Kinshasa, and Cape Town. The move is expected to increase travel options, business opportunities, and foreign revenue for the country.

Mr. Msigwa also highlighted that the government is investing in modernizing airline maintenance facilities, improving working conditions, and upgrading services at airports nationwide to enhance the overall travel experience for passengers.
