President Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to officially inaugurate the rehabilitated and newly constructed Kariakoo Market on February 8, 2026, in a landmark event set to restore the status of one of Tanzania’s most vital commercial centres.

The market, which underwent major reconstruction following a fire that destroyed a significant portion of the facility, has been fully renovated alongside the construction of a new modern complex designed to meet current and future trading demands.

Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila said the project has been completed 100 percent, with more than Sh28 billion invested in the rehabilitation and construction works.

He said the renewed market now provides more than 1,500 stalls, offering improved, organised and safer business spaces for traders.

Mr Chalamila said the project reflects the government’s commitment to supporting traders and strengthening key economic infrastructure, noting that Kariakoo remains a strategic commercial hub for Dar es Salaam and the national economy at large.

He called on residents of the region, as well as small, medium and large-scale traders, to participate in the inauguration, saying the event will be historic and symbolises the government’s continued efforts to empower traders and stimulate economic growth.

“The reopening of Kariakoo Market is not only about restoring business activities but also about enhancing order, safety and efficiency in trade, while contributing to increased revenue collection and job creation,” he said.

Ahead of the inauguration, the regional commissioner directed small traders operating along roads leading to the market to vacate the areas and ensure all access roads are cleared before February 8.

He said the measure is intended to allow smooth movement of traders and customers and to ensure the market operates as planned.

The reopening of the Kariakoo Market is expected to revive confidence among traders and shoppers, while reinforcing Dar es Salaam’s position as the country’s leading commercial hub.
