Journalists urged to investigate environmental issues to drive policy change

Environmental journalists from Northern and Central Tanzania have been urged to produce investigative stories that not only highlight issues but also drive policy reforms and strengthen accountability.

The call came during a specialized training for environmental reporters, organized by the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) in collaboration with the Media Institute for Indigenous Peoples in Africa (MAIPAC).

Kenneth Simbaya, Director of the Union of Tanzanian Press Clubs (UTPC), and MAIPAC Director Mussa Juma, stressed that journalism today must go beyond reporting daily events.

“Modern reporting should spark change. Your stories should influence laws and policies while adhering to ethical standards,” Simbaya said.

Juma emphasized that investigative reporting should promote accountability while respecting cultural values and traditions.

“Report on gaps in laws, regulations, and policies, but ensure your stories engage communities and empower citizens to make informed decisions,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of responsible reporting in indigenous communities, such as the Hadzabe.

“Journalists must respect local customs, seek community consent before reporting, and avoid language that demeans or misrepresents them,” Juma said.

The training encouraged reporters to examine issues such as the impact of climate change on remote communities and emerging land conflicts, highlighting the need for thorough investigation and ethical storytelling.

Lawyer Paul Kisabo advised journalists to conduct safety assessments before field reporting and to be aware of laws related to environmental and media reporting to ensure their work is both impactful and legally compliant.

A total of 35 journalists from Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Tanga, Singida, Dodoma, and Manyara regions participated.

Sponsored by UNESCO, the training is also scheduled for the Lake Zone, Eastern, Coastal regions, and Zanzibar.
