Mr. Martin Chungong, Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), arrived in Tanzania yesterday for an official working visit, underscoring the country’s growing role in global parliamentary diplomacy.

The visit comes ahead of the 153rd IPU Assembly, which Tanzania will host in October 2026 at the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC).

During his stay, Mr. Chungong is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania, formalizing collaboration in the lead-up to the international event.

The signing ceremony is scheduled for February 27, 2026, at the Parliament’s Annex Offices in Dar es Salaam. Mr. Chungong will sign the agreement alongside Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Mussa Azzan Zungu, representing their respective institutions.

The MoU marks a critical step in coordinating Tanzania’s preparations and enhancing parliamentary cooperation with the IPU.

Following the signing, Mr. Chungong will hold discussions with President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan on strengthening bilateral cooperation between Tanzania and the IPU and reviewing arrangements for the upcoming Assembly.

Hosting the 153rd IPU Assembly is a milestone for Tanzania, signaling international recognition of the country’s parliamentary maturity and its commitment to fostering dialogue on global governance issues.

Officials say the event will bring together lawmakers from across the world, providing a platform for Tanzania to showcase its democratic institutions and development initiatives.
