Government to construct 257 kilometers of paved roads in Dar es Salaam

By Our Reporter, Dodoma

The government has announced plans to construct a network of paved roads covering 257 kilometers across Dar es Salaam region under the Second Phase of the Dar es Salaam Metropolitan Development Project (DMDP II), a major initiative aimed at upgrading the region’s critical infrastructure, including roads, drainage systems, and other urban facilities.

Deputy Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG), Reuben Kwagilwa (MP), disclosed the plans today, February 3, 2026, in Parliament, Dodoma, while responding to a supplementary question from Kawe Constituency MP, Geofrey Timoth, who sought clarity on when several roads in his constituency leading to other parts of Dar es Salaam would be repaired.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of PMO-RALG, Prof. Riziki Shemdoe, Hon. Kwagilwa said the project reflects the government’s commitment to improving urban mobility and easing transport challenges for residents of the city.

He explained that under DMDP II, the government has allocated USD 438 million, equivalent to Tanzanian Shillings 1.131 trillion, to develop all key infrastructure in Dar es Salaam, with a particular focus on paved roads to facilitate smoother traffic flow, enhance trade, and improve access to social services.

“The construction of these roads will not only reduce travel time and transport costs but also boost economic activities by connecting residential areas with commercial hubs, schools, and health facilities,” Kwagilwa said.

The DMDP II project is part of a broader government strategy to modernize urban infrastructure, reduce congestion, and ensure sustainable development in Dar es Salaam, one of the country’s fastest-growing cities.

Residents are expected to benefit from safer, more reliable roads, which will also contribute to attracting investments and improving the quality of life in the region.
