Government reaffirms commitment to elderly welfare

By The Respondents Reporter

The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of older persons, describing them as a national treasure whose wisdom and experience remain central to social values and development.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, Dr John Jingu, said the Government will continue strengthening care and support services for the elderly in recognition of their contribution to the country’s development.

Dr Jingu made the remarks on February 24, 2025, during a visit to the Fungafunga Elderly Care Centre in Morogoro, where he interacted with residents and staff of the facility.

He said the Government acknowledges the role played by older citizens in building the nation and is committed to improving services provided at elderly care centres, including healthcare, nutrition, accommodation and social welfare.

He noted that the Government’s priority is to ensure older persons live in safe, dignified and comfortable environments, stressing that their experience and guidance are a foundation for moral values and community development.

He added that it is the shared responsibility of the Government and society to guarantee that the elderly receive appropriate and quality services at all times.

Dr Jingu also urged staff at the centre to continue carrying out their duties with professionalism, compassion and dedication, emphasising that caring for the elderly is a responsibility that requires commitment and respect.

During the visit, he handed over various donations to the residents, including food items and financial support to help meet their daily needs.

One of the residents, Daniel John, commended the Government for improving services and the living environment at the centre, saying the support provided gives residents peace of mind and a sense of belonging.

The visit underscores the Government’s determination to ensure special groups, particularly the elderly, are protected and supported in line with national policies and development priorities.
