The government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Tanzania’s fisheries sector following an inspection of the floating jetty rehabilitation project at the Tanzania Fisheries Corporation (TAFICO) headquarters in Ras Mkwavi–Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam.
The inspection was conducted on February 10, 2026, by the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries (Fisheries), Prof Mohammed Sheikh, on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Ms Agness Meena.
The project is a key component of government efforts to modernise fisheries infrastructure and improve the efficiency of fishing operations under TAFICO.
During the visit, Prof Sheikh reviewed the progress of the rehabilitation works and directed the contractor, Songoro Marine Company, to complete all remaining tasks and hand over the project by February 15, 2026, in line with the contract.
He said the floating jetty is a critical facility for the operation of fishing vessels, particularly as TAFICO prepares to receive its first fishing vessel, which is expected to arrive in the country on February 21, 2026.
“The government has invested heavily in this infrastructure to ensure the fisheries value chain is fully strengthened. Timely and high-quality completion of this project is therefore non-negotiable, as the government will not allow any extension beyond the agreed deadline,” Prof Sheikh said.
He added that the completion of the jetty will enhance operational efficiency, improve safety in vessel handling and support the broader goal of unlocking the potential of the Blue Economy.
Speaking during the visit, TAFICO Acting Chief Executive Officer, Ms Perpetua Massaga, who represented the Chief Executive Officer, CPA Shaibu Matessa, commended the government for its close supervision of strategic development projects implemented by the corporation.
“This inspection reflects the government’s strong commitment to ensuring that strategic investments undertaken by TAFICO are completed on time and deliver real value to the fisheries sector and the national economy,” she said.
Ms Massaga noted that TAFICO management remains fully committed to closely overseeing the project to ensure it is delivered according to the agreed schedule and contractual standards.
Once completed, the floating jetty rehabilitation project is expected to significantly boost TAFICO’s capacity to serve fishing vessels, improve service delivery and contribute to the growth of the fisheries sector and the Blue Economy in Tanzania.
