Eunice Makondo from the Central Zone and Michael Karay from the Southern Zone stole the spotlight at the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS) sports tournament held at Highland grounds in Morogoro, dominating the long-distance races and collecting multiple awards.
The two-day event featured athletics across 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1,500m, 3,000m, and 5,000m for men and women, alongside football, netball, Bao, darts, cards, and other games.
Awards were handed out at the Cate Conference Centre in Morogoro by Dr. Hassan Abasi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism.
Eunice, 23, was the star of the women’s category, claiming five awards, including first place in the 200m, 800m, 1,500m, and 3,000m races, and second in the 100m.
She also received a trophy for being the best attacker in netball. Eunice, who previously won the Nyamongo Games in Serengeti, Mara, said her success comes from discipline and consistent training.
“The secret to winning is practice. Even on weekends, I make time to train. Exercise is not only for fitness, it keeps you ready for any challenge,” she said.
Michael dominated the men’s long-distance events, winning gold in the 800m, 1,500m, and 5,000m races.
He urged colleagues, particularly TFS staff, to dedicate time to training, noting that regular participation in competitions keeps him fit and competitive.
Dr. Abasi said the ministry plans to organize regular internal sports tournaments to boost teamwork and staff wellbeing.
“We aim to hold a ministry-wide sports bonanza involving all institutions to encourage participation at all levels,” he said, adding that a reward of one million shillings will be given to any athlete who wins more than three awards.
The tournament highlighted the role of sports in promoting health, teamwork, and excellence among TFS staff, while celebrating the talent and dedication of athletes like Eunice and Michael.
