Digital Tanzania brings fast internet and connectivity to every corner

By The Respondents Reporter

Tanzania is making history in digital connectivity. The Digital Tanzania Project (DTP) has completed 758 telecommunications towers across the country, and they are now fully operational—bringing internet and communication services closer to citizens than ever before.

Speaking at a recent working session, Bakari Mwamgugu, DTP Project Coordinator, said this milestone is a huge step toward building a modern digital Tanzania.

"We have successfully completed 758 towers, all now serving communities. This ensures that more people, especially in remote areas, can access internet and communication services," he said.

The project has also launched 32 service centers and increased internet capacity to 60 Gigabits per second (Gbps) with mainland Tanzania receiving 40 Gbps and Zanzibar 20 Gbps.

This upgrade ensures government offices can access fast, affordable internet, improving public services and boosting the country’s digital economy.

Paul Seaden from the World Bank praised the project, saying, "From planning to execution, this project has been highly successful. We will continue to support its completion to achieve all its goals by October."

Dr. Angelino Miso, Assistant Director of ICT Systems and Services at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, explained that the working session focused on reviewing progress and ensuring smooth implementation.

He highlighted that in 2024, under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, Tanzania launched the 10-Year Digital Economy Strategy (2024–2034), aiming to make the country a digital hub in Africa.

"The Ministry is improving ICT and communication infrastructure nationwide, strengthening governance, and building local talent to meet the demands of the digital economy," Dr. Miso said.

He also stressed digital inclusion, ensuring every citizen no matter where they live can benefit from modern technology and participate in the digital economy.

The success of the Digital Tanzania Project shows the government’s commitment to bringing fast internet, better communication, and new opportunities to all citizens paving the way for a stronger, more connected Tanzania.
