The Governor of the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), Mr. Emmanuel Tutuba, has issued a warning against folding or sticking money into flower bouquets as gifts, especially during the Valentine’s season.
Speaking in an interview on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at his Dodoma office, Governor Tutuba emphasized that such practices are illegal and can damage the nation’s currency.
“Money is a national treasure,” he explained. “Attaching it to bouquets with glue or folding it carelessly causes the notes to tear or wear out quickly. This forces the Bank of Tanzania to print new money more frequently, which increases costs for the country.”
Governor Tutuba advised that those wishing to give Valentine’s gifts should either purchase meaningful items or give money in its original, untouched condition.
He also stressed that anyone handling Tanzanian currency has a responsibility to preserve and safeguard it, as it represents one of the country’s most important national symbols.
