The Government of Tanzania, through the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, has announced plans to build a modern, international-standard fisheries training institute in Bagamoyo, Pwani Region

The new institute will be established under the Fisheries Education and Training Agency (FETA) at its Mbegani Campus.

This major investment is aimed at empowering Tanzanian citizens especially youth with high-quality education and practical skills in fisheries, marine sciences, and the blue economy.

Once completed, the institute is expected to significantly increase employment opportunities, strengthen local expertise, and reduce reliance on foreign specialists in the fisheries sector.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Bashiru Ally Kakurwa, during his visit to the campus on February 12, 2026.

He emphasized that the institute will be equipped with modern infrastructure, advanced technology, updated learning tools, and highly skilled instructors to meet international standards.

“Our goal is to build an institution that reflects the dignity, vision, and pride of our nation,” the Minister said.

“This college must match the legacy of the Father of the Nation, Julius Nyerere, by producing disciplined, skilled, and patriotic professionals who will serve Tanzania with integrity.”he added

As part of strengthening hands-on learning, the Government also plans to purchase a new fishing training vessel.

This will allow students to gain real-world experience at sea, ensuring graduates are fully prepared for professional fisheries operations.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary for Fisheries, Mohammed Sheikh, highlighted the importance of investing in Tanzanians themselves.

He noted that strong training institutions are key to safeguarding national interests and ensuring sustainable use of marine resources.

“Local professionals are our backbone,” he said. “They are our security and confidence. When we invest in our own people, we protect our resources and our future. This institute is a national asset, and today, wherever you find fishermen across the country, nearly 75 percent are graduates of FETA.”

Meanwhile, FETA Chief Executive Officer Semvua Mzighani said the agency continues to work closely with national education institutions, universities, colleges, and other government bodies such as Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation, the Tanzania Navy, and the Tanzania Forest Service Agency.

He added that FETA also collaborates with regional and international partners and implements development projects funded by the Government and development partners.

One such initiative, the Tanzania Sustainable Fisheries Management Project (TASFAM), will support the purchase of an additional training vessel.

For citizens of Bagamoyo, Pwani Region, and Tanzania as a whole, this project represents progress, opportunity, and long-term benefits.

It strengthens education, creates jobs, supports sustainable fisheries, and places Tanzanians at the center of managing and benefiting from the nation’s marine resources.
